My Exact Guide to Stress-Free Santa Picture Day
Let’s be real: Santa picture day can either be the best part of your Christmas season... or the most stressful.
At Gem State Christmas, I’ve learned over the years that a little planning goes a long way—and I’m sharing my exact step-by-step guide to making Santa photos a peaceful, joyful memory (without the tears or chaos!).
If you’re an Idaho mom with kiddos under 12, this is the game plan you need:
1. Pick the Right Time
Choose a time when your child is normally well-rested and fed.
Mid-morning or early afternoon (after nap time) usually works best. Avoid pushing too close to bedtime or mealtime!
2. Prep Outfits Early
Pick your outfits at least 2-3 days before picture day.
• Stick to comfy, layered outfits (it’s Idaho, after all!).
• Classic Christmas colors like green, red, white, and navy photograph beautifully.
• Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or fussy. If they’re comfortable, they’re happier.
3. Pack a Santa Bag
Before you leave, pack a small "Santa Survival Bag" with:
• Favorite snack (mini pretzels, crackers, small candy cane)
• Small comfort toy
• Tissues and wipes
• A mini surprise toy or sticker for after pictures
• Water bottle
4. Talk About Santa Ahead of Time
In the days before your session:
• Read a story featuring Santa.
• Watch a short Christmas cartoon.
• Practice waving or saying “Hi Santa!” together.
The more familiar Santa feels, the less intimidating he’ll be.
5. Arrive Early + Ease Into It
At Gem State Christmas, we plan time for kids to meet Santa slowly—no rushing to sit on his lap right away.
Give your child a few minutes to warm up. Let them explore, watch other kids, or even sit nearby first. Connection first, camera second!
6. Lower the Pressure
The best smiles happen naturally—not by saying “Smile!” fifty times.
Encourage real moments, giggles, and little hugs.
Remember: even shy smiles and curious looks make beautiful, magical memories.
7. Plan a Treat for After
Celebrate the moment with a fun reward—hot cocoa at Truffles, Etc in Downtown Meridian, a trip to a park, or picking out a Christmas ornament together.
(Your child will remember the whole experience, not just the pictures!)
Bottom Line?
Slow down. Have fun. Capture the magic as it comes.
Santa picture day should be about joy, not perfection—and with a little prep, you’ll walk away with heart-melting memories that will last a lifetime.
